At around 2:00 am this morning, Big Tree VFC along with several fire departments were dispatched mutual aide to Newton Abbott Fire Company, Inc. for a working fire in an apartment building on North Street.Upon arriving at the scene, fire chiefs from Newton Abbott found heavy fire on the first floor, with flames extending into the second floor and attic. At that time, there were still reports of residents in the building. The chiefs entered the building to perform a search and possible rescues. While attempting a search of the second floor, conditions deteriorated rapidly, causing the two chiefs to declare a mayday and bail out of the second floor to safety. A mayday is declared when a firefighter experiences an emergency while fighting a fire. The most usual occurrences often include when they become trapped/injured and they themselves need rescue. They were evaluated by EMS and found to both be okay. Additionally, all residents of the building also managed to escape, including one resident who jumped from a second floor window. Due to the extreme fire conditions, numerous people potentially trapped, and the maydays declared, the incident quickly rose to a third alarm, bringing in over a dozen fire departments from all over Hamburg, Orchard Park, and West Seneca. The building is a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
